Dr. Deddeh E. P. Supuwood ,  head of Oncology at John F. Kennedy Medical Center, presented a comprehensive overview of the successes and challenges in managing multiple myeloma, a complex hematologic malignancy.

The presentation featured a compelling case study of a 55-year-old female patient who arrived at the medical center with severe pathological fractures and vertebral compression resulting from bacterial infections in her bone marrow. Through rigorous examination and advanced imaging techniques including X-ray and CT scans, Dr. Supuwood’s team initiated an intensive regimen of six cycles of chemotherapy over several weeks. The patient also received targeted antibiotic therapy and is currently undergoing physiotherapy, reflecting the center’s holistic approach to managing the disease and its complications.

Dr. Supuwood emphasized the financial burden, termed “financial toxicity,” which remains a significant challenge for many patients battling multiple myeloma. She noted that despite medical advancements, access to costly medications often proves prohibitive for patients, underscoring the critical need for broader accessibility to life-saving treatments.

In addition to discussing current patient care strategies, Dr. Supuwood provided historical insights into the disease, tracing its origins and milestones in medical research. She highlighted disparities in disease prevalence, noting a higher incidence among individuals of African descent and males compared to females.

“We are committed to advancing patient care and improving outcomes for individuals battling multiple myeloma,” said Dr. Deddeh Supuwood. “While we celebrate successes in treatment, we also recognize the ongoing challenges posed by financial barriers and demographic disparities. We must continue to advocate for equitable access to essential medications and comprehensive care.”

The presentation concluded with a call to action for increased governmental support to ensure all patients have access to affordable treatments, thereby enhancing survival rates and quality of life for those affected by multiple myeloma.
