Anesthesia
The Anesthesia Department plays a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures. This department is responsible for administering anesthesia, monitoring patients’ vital signs, and managing pain before, during, and after surgery. The department typically gives three main phases of care:
Pre-Anesthesia Care
- Patient Evaluation: Conducting thorough patient interviews to assess medical history, surgical history, current medications, allergies, and NPO (nil per os) status.
- Physical Examination: Performing physical exams, including vital signs, airway assessment, and cardiopulmonary evaluation.
- Anesthetic Plan: Developing a tailored anesthetic plan, including post-anesthesia and pain management strategies, and obtaining informed consent.
Intraoperative Care
- Anesthesia Administration: Administering anesthesia and continuously monitoring the patient’s physiological status.
- Documentation: Keeping a detailed, time-based record of medications, fluids, anesthesia techniques, patient positioning, and any notable events during surgery.
- Patient Safety: Ensuring patient safety through vigilant monitoring and immediate response to any complications.
