John F. Kennedy Medical Center Gets State of the Art Trauma and Intensive Care Unit.
Monrovia, May 17, 2021, Liberia’s premiere health provider, the biggest referral and teaching hospital the John F. Kennedy Medical Center on Monday May 17, 2021 welcomed the official dedication and turning over ceremony of a newly renovated and expanded Trauma and Intensive Care Unit with modern medical equipment to meet the technological needs of a fully functional ICU in the Twenty first century.
The program which was held on the compound of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center , brought together the President of the Republic of Liberia H.E President George M. Weah and Firstlady Madam Clar Marie Weah, an array of government officials, members of the Board of Directors of the JFK, Medical Doctors, the Management and staff of the JFK as well as members of the Fourth estate.
The John F. Kennedy Medical Center is the biggest referral and Teaching hospital in Liberia which was built in 1971 for the purpose of providing affordable healthcare services to the population of Liberia and also conduct trainings for medical students in different specialties.The predecessors and successors of the management Teams at the medical center have struggled over the years to improve the clinical services and infrastructural needs of the medical center amidst budgetary constraints among other challenges.
In 2019, under the Administration of Doctor Jerry Fahnloe Brown CEO/General Administrator of the JFK, the National Oil Company of Liberia and partners (TGS – Nopec) through it’s President and CEO Atty. Saifua Mai Gray committed to carryout a project of extensive renovation and expansion works on the Trauma and Intensive Care Unit at the JFK as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).
The project was implemented in two phases with the first phase being the renovation, expansion and remodeling of the Trauma & ICU which lasted over a six months period; while phase Two included the supply of medical materials and equipment. The entire project was completed in 2020 amid the negative impact of COVID-19 in the delayed of the project.
At the dedication ceremony, the Administrator of the JFK Dr.Jerry Fahnloe Brown expressed his gratitude on behalf of the JFK Management for the successful implementation of the project, Dr. Brown said that it is his anticipation that more will be done to improve the clinical and infrastructural needs of the medical center. The Chief Medical Officer of the medical center Dr. Sia Wata Camanor also buttressed the efforts of the JFK CEO in commending the Government of Liberia through the National Oil Company of Liberia and partners for undertaking such a worthy cause in the interest of improving the healthcare delivery system in the country. The health minister who is also the Chair of the Board of Directors of the JFK, also expressed her thanks and appreciation to the government of Liberia through the National Oil Company of Liberia for the upgrading of the facility and said that the renovation of the ICU at JFK will cater to severe and life threatening illnesses that have caused the lives of many over the years and will also lower trauma mobility and mortality in the country.
For his part, the President of the Republic of Liberia H.E President George Manneh Weah expressed gratitude and appreciation to NOCAL and partner for their support to his government Pro – poor Agenda for prosperity and Development, of which he said the provision of adequate health care to the people of Liberia is a major component. He went further to say that the upgrading of the facility will provide lifesaving health services on an equal access basis, to 1.8 million inhabitants of Monrovia and it’s environs, as well as residents in the fifteen (15) counties of Liberia who, based on referral and need, will require advance emergency care. The Liberian leader also used the occasion to admonished the Management and staff of the JFK to take excellent care and maintenance of the facility in order to efficiently and effectively serve the purpose which they were installed
