John F. Kennedy Medical Center Announces Key Updates and Developments

Monrovia, Liberia – August 5, 2024–

Dr. Emmanuel Tamba, Chief Medical Officer of John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC), today provided an update on recent initiatives and developments aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency at the facility.

Dr. Tamba announced the launch of a regular outreach program designed to address past negative perceptions of the medical center and better manage the patient influx, particularly in maternal services. Additionally, a new weekly meeting system for department heads will be implemented to streamline resource allocation and reduce material burdens.

Significant progress has been made in the OBGYN department, with recent training upgrades leading to a marked decrease in maternal mortality rates. Staff evaluation and appreciation will now occur quarterly to recognize and reward exceptional performance.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Dama Yekerson Koffa underscored the need for updated training on first-line response equipment. She also revealed that UBA will soon start collecting service fees in certain departments.

International collaborations are set to advance, with a delegation preparing for a trip to China and Hong Kong to secure a new generator and strengthen partnerships. Dr. Peter Coleman introduced a new Urology machine from the Royal College of Endenburg, while Dr. Benjamin Harris announced a renewed partnership with the University of Boston for psychiatric training.

The HEARRT Foundation, known for its benevolent work in Liberia, will return in September 2024 to assist with complex surgeries. Additionally, Dr. Alvin Nah Doe Sr. highlighted that recently a set of drills was purchased by the International Christian Medical Fellowship (ICMFEL) and given to be used by neurosurgeons at the JFK Medical Center.

The CEO, Dr. Linda Birch emphasized her commitment to maintaining hospital cleanliness and ensuring the availability of essential drugs. Discussions are ongoing for a $200,000 loan to support the hospital’s needs.
