MONROVIA – October 25, 2024 – A delegation of medical doctors from the LIGHTHOUSE MEDICAL TEAM, based in Texas, USA, visited the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC) in Sinkor today to assess the needs and challenges of Liberia’s largest referral hospital. The visit aimed to explore ways to offer support to the country’s struggling healthcare system.
During a meeting with the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Linda Birch, the discussion focused on the urgent need for medical supplies, equipment, training, and financial assistance. When Dr. Robert Hamil, the delegation leader, inquired about areas requiring immediate help, Dr. Birch stated, “Liberia is in need of everything—from medicine and medical equipment to specialized training and funds to strengthen our capacity.”
Dr. Birch expressed deep concern about the hospital’s ongoing struggle to provide medical care to those unable to afford treatment. She noted that a significant portion of patients cannot pay for essential services, and external support is critical to helping them receive the care they need.
Highlighting some of the critical gaps in diagnostics, Dr. Birch revealed that Liberia currently has four CT scan machines, yet none are operational at JFKMC. Furthermore, a mammogram and a CT scan machine recently donated by the Italian government require $25,000 for repairs. These machines are vital for diagnosing conditions such as cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
Dr. Birch warmly welcomed the LIGHTHOUSE MEDICAL TEAM and encouraged them to consider any possible partnerships or avenues of assistance that could benefit the Liberian people. “We are hopeful that together, we can bring much-needed relief to those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to lifesaving treatment,” she said.
The visit marks the beginning of a potential collaboration aimed at improving healthcare delivery at JFKMC and across Liberia.
