The American ambassador, his excellence Michael A. Mccarthy and entourage paid a visit at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center today May 27, 2021. He made an extensive tour of the facility ( New trama unit, ICU, Center of excellence for infectious diseases, Newly renovated Laboratory and Pharmacy units, etc.) 

Two Liberian Doctors From the John F. Kennedy Medical Center Becomes Liberia’s First Two Fellows Of the West African College Of Physicians and Surgeons!!

On the Monday October 26, 2020 edition of the program “INSIDE JFK”, we play host to Medical Doctors from the Internal Medicine Department at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, who recently sat an examination administer to Physicians in the West African region by the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons. The Liberian Doctors successfully passed the examination and were bestowed upon the honor of FELLOWS of the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons. 

Their discussion were centered around STRENGTHENING THE HEALTH SYSTEM IN LIBERIA, with specific emphasis on Specialists Training. They also spoke about their experiences while sitting the examination and cautioned other Physicians in Liberia who are pursuing similar path in the medical field to work hard and take their studies seriously.

The West African College of Physicians was established in 1976. It is an association of medical specialists in the following disciplines: Community Health, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Laboratory Medicine, made up of its major specialties of Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Medical Microbiology, Paediatrics and Psychiatry

Initially, the College operated in the five English-speaking West African countries. In recent years, its membership has expanded to include the eight French-speaking countries and established a presence in two Lusophone countries.

The College is organized into faculties, made up of specialists in each of the major disciplines listed above. Fellows in the various countries are organized into Chapters. Currently, there are thirteen (13) chapters: Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Republic of Benin, Senegal and Sierra Leone and Togo.

The objectives of the College are: 

  1. To promote professional training of physicians in West Africa
  2. To promote the standards of professional practice, ethics and morals of physicians in West Africa
  3. To promote health and healthcare in West Africa
  4. To determine persons to be designated as specialist physicians after due consideration of their training, qualifications and experience
  5. To advise and assist the governments of the sub region, the West African Health Organization and other relevant organizations on matters relating to training, health promotion, health care and research in West Africa
  6. To cooperate with appropriate bodies that encourage and provide facilities for the achievement of the objectives of the College
  7. To publish books, journals and other scientific materials as may be considered useful in support of these activities.

The College is responsible for postgraduate specialist training of doctors in the five Anglophone West African countries.

The two medical Doctors are currently the only two fellows of the West African College of Physicians in Liberia. They have promised to help impart the knowledge acquired to younger Physicians in the Medical field in Liberia who are pursuing similar path.
